"Sonata for viola and piano" is an early work, written during the time at the conservatoire, under the influence of Shostakovich’s music. It consists of three parts: Moderato - Andante poco sostenuto - Allegro molto.
The first part, written in sonata form, is characterised by a slow and concentrated musical development. The slowly rising tension finds release in the culmination at the end of the development and reprise.
A state of absolute calm and inner contemplation is the characteristic feature of the second part.
The last part is written in rondo form, and is now like a gushing stream, then like a half-forgotten, nostalgic waltz, now like a choral, reminiscent of dead march, gaining a more and more menacing character. When the music reaches the peak of the tension at the end of the part, it stops suddenly. The slow coda at the end of the sonata doesn’t harmonize with all the previous material.
This music stems from a different reality, from another world. |
